Making Prayer Meaningful Class
August 21, 2019 @ 10:30 am - 11:30 am
Sitting in services, have you ever asked yourself – why am I here? In the most simplistic understanding you choose to be part of the Jewish community, either voluntarily or through some form of obligation (hopefully the former). During Shabbat and other Jewish holidays you may find yourself in a Jewish sanctuary. In this class we will explore the origin of Jewish prayer and how it has evolved over time. We will learn the meaning behind the structure of the various services and the prayers themselves. These prayers in our siddur are shared with other congregations around the world. Prayer serves many purposes, one of the functions of prayer is to unite us with other Jews around the world and provide us with a common experience.
Tefilah (prayer), according to the Rabbis, is where Hashem connects with us. While I would never discount the power of prayer, in this class we will understand prayer as but one method for communicating with Hashem. This class will be offered beginning in July and will meet weekly. As Jews we are known as people of the book, moreso than the Talmud or the Torah, the text we use most frequently is the siddur. Whether you believe in God, in nature, in the power of human beings…there is a place for you in this class and we would benefit from your perspective and involvement! All materials included.
